Raising Awareness in New Zealand
Taylor is just 13 years old but she has been doing an amazing amount of work raising awareness of the issue of shark finning in her school and community. Some of the things she has been doing include creating powerpoint presentations, making speeches, posting her own videos on YouTube, making stickers and posters. www.stopsharkfinning.net

The great white shark, scientific name Carcharodon carcharias Did you know that the Great White is an endangered species and there are less then 3,500 in our oceans?
A young sea nomad, rides on the tail of a tawny nurse shark, in Sulawesi, Indonesia. Marine nomadism has almost completely disappeared in South East Asia as a result of severe marine degradation. I believe children such as Enal have stories that could prove pivotal in contemporary marine conservation.

A pic of Stanley Larsen's fresh seafood market in Menemsha, MV.
While picking up a few lobsters for dinner we visited with Stanley, he told us a story about seeing a 20 foot Great White taking chunks out of his swordfish catch just off the coast of MV back in 1974 (right when they were filming JAWS in town.)

white shark research on guadalupe island check out NAT GEO Channel for this cool show. The legendary great white shark is far more fearsome in our imaginations than in reality. As scientific research on these elusive predators increases, their image as mindless killing machines is beginning to fade.

The White Shark is found in coastal surface waters in all major oceans. It is known for its size, with the largest individuals known to have approached or exceeded (20 ft) in length, (5,000 lb) in weight.

Of the 100-plus annual shark attacks worldwide, fully one-third to one-half are attributable to great whites. However, most of these are not fatal, and new research finds that great whites, who are naturally curious, are "sample biting" then releasing their victims rather than preying on humans. It's not a terribly comforting distinction, but it does indicate that humans are not actually on the great white's menu.
They have slate-gray upper bodies to blend in with the rocky coastal sea floor, but get their name from their universally white under carriage.
The great white shark is arguably the world's largest known extant macropredatory fish and is one of the primary predators of marine mammals. It is also known to prey upon a variety of other marine animals including fish, pinnipeds, and seabirds.
The great white shark came into existence during the Mid-Miocene epoch.
The earliest known fossils are about 16 million years old.
